St. Lydia of Philippi
Her/His Story
Lydia of Thyatira was a devout woman and merchant of purple cloth from the city of Thyatira who lived in the 1st century. She encountered the Apostle Paul in Philippi and became the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe. After hearing the Gospel, she and her household were baptized, and she generously opened her home to Paul and the early Christian community. St. Lydia is remembered for her hospitality, faith, and support of the early Church.
